Peruvian Adventures #9

Monday, October 18, 2010

Sadly, we had to skip out on Lake Titicaca and the floating islands today. I was up throughout the night and not feeling well and knew that it was going to be an all day affair. Kimberly was still feeling out of it from the altitude and sheer exhaustion. Coca tea hasn't been helping. We stayed in, skipped breakfast and slept and got out into the town of Puno around noon.

We went and got lunch at the place the group had dinner the night before. I had the quinoa soup which was amazing and Kimberly had the mini pizza with spinach and cheese which looked really good. After we walked a bit and I still wasn't feeling all that great so we went back to the room. We stayed a bit and then decided to go check out the Coca Museum. It was 5 Soles to get in and worth it. Approximately $2. It told about the history of the coca leaf and it's many medicinal uses and the culture. We then got to try on various costumes which was great. After we went to a bakery and bought some bread and went back to the room. Julio called later to check on us. He said the doctor would be coming to the hotel because quite a few of the people on our tour were sick. He asked if I wanted him to check on me and I said possibly. I wasn't sure if I wanted to shell out the 120.00 Soles. After a bit I decided to do it since I knew we were going to be on a small bus the whole next day. Anyway, this cute little older gentleman Peruvian doctor comes with Julio to pay me a visit. Julio translates and I get a shot in the bum (ouch!) and a prescription of three various medications. Julio goes and gets them filled and we have our meeting and then order dinner to be brought up to the room. I ordered chicken soup and Kimberly the cheese omelet. We ate, I talked to David and then we were out for the night.

Highlight of the day was trying costumes on at the coca museum.
