Maybe leaving my window open was a bad thing?

I am in Scotland right now, about to compete in the Worlds. We're staying in Stirling at these great little flats. I'm enjoying the cooler weather and decided to leave my window wide open while I'm doing laundry to air out the room and cool it down a bit. I also left the light on - just not thinking. I come back at 2 am to find about 4 mosquitos and a big scary spider. I'm wondering how to get rid of them because anything that flies eratically at me really freaks me out. I decide on the cannister of Oust to spray from afar and end up spending at least 20 minutes trying to get these suck

Cinco De Porko

Ahhhhhh! It's Cinco de Mayo and we are having a big 'ol potluck at work. I made red chile cheese enchiladas. Someone brought homemade pork tamales, Mexican soup, homemade salsas, green chile chicken & cheese enchiladas, these cream cheese tortilla roll up things, and the yummy fried tortilla chips from Vallarta. Holy Coronary. It's all freakin' good!!

I love the revival theaters!!

Tomorrow evening I am going to see Kurosawa's Seven Samurai at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica. This film is one of my favorite Kurosawa films so I'm really excited about seeing this film on the big screen and dragging (not really) David along with me.

I am in a total love affair with the revival movie houses right now. I love being able to see some of my old favorites up on the big screen and be introduced to some great stuff that I haven't seen. I love when it's a newer clean print but I also love when it's a old scratchy one as well. I love the old concession stands and the old seating and lighting. I'd love to have my own theater someday and this is the closest that I come to the feel of that and it's a great feeling.

Disneyland

On Sunday David B. and I decided to head over to Disneyland to make use of our annual passes. We had a great time but I only wish they had a "No Strollers" day. People nowadays just seem so unaware of their surroundings. They will have their stroller full of kids and junk that they brought or bought and will come to an abrupt halt right in front a fellow patrons path and just be comepletely clueless about it.

Other people exist!

The Return Of The Thin White Duke Into Your Hunky Dory Neighborhood Or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Discover David Bowie And All His Infinite Glory

Dead-icated to my poor, sick little friend Trevor. Get better soon, ya poof!

I remember being around 10 years old and being over at my babysitter's house and looking through her massive collection of vinyl records. I was completely enthralled with looking at all of the covers. Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Supertramp, The Who, Fleetwood Mac.

I came upon Hunky Dory. I just loved the cover art of the handsome androgynous boy in the slightly hazy background. Then I came up onto Bowie's Station To Station. I was a bit mesmerized by the man on the cover with bright orange hair. What was that funky wall he was peering out of? I remember pulling the vinyl from it's sleeve and setting on the turntable. I still love that sound of the slightly scratchyness of the beginning of a song on vinyl! The title song, "Station To Station" took me on a journey and I loved every minute of it. From that moment I was hooked by David Bowie. Bowie's version of "Wild Is The Wind" is pretty darn incredible.

I think that Bowie is a musical genius. There was a week back in Jr. High where a friend and I listened to "Ziggy Stardust" over and over again on cassette. It just blew our young, impressionable minds away!

Cal Worthington

I must be on some commercial kick or something right now...

When I was a kid I loved the Cal Worthington car commercials. I was pretty darn happy when I would catch a new one to see who Cal Worthington's new dog Spot was. It was never, ever a dog. I remember a tiger, a pony, a seal, a hippo and even an elephant. Some poor animal always got the glorious roll of "Spot".

I just dug Cal Worthington. I remember thinking that he looked like a kind and honest man and if I had the funds readily available to me at age 8, I would have easily hopped on my tricycle and sped over to Bellflower and purchased one of his fine vehicles.

I also remember the catchy jingle. "If you need a better car..." O.K., this is where the problem starts. When I was a kid I could have sworn I heard this: "If you need a better car, pussy-cow. He's the greatest one by far, pussy-cow. Give a new car to your wife, she will love you all her life, pussy-cow, pussy-cow, pussy-cow!"

I find out years later that they were actually singing "Go see Cal". That makes sense! I had distorted images in my brain of some bovine-feline cross breed. Whew!

Storm Watch 2009

Dang! The rain is really bad tonight. It's taken me almost an hour and a half to get to Glendale from Universal City! Right by work the road I take was completely flooded up above the sidewalk and people were turning around in the middle of the road because they thought they couldn't make it. I decided to chance it and I made it although at one point I thought that I made a mistake because it was a lot higher than I thought but my car seems to be ok. It's bad out there folks. Be careful!

Rachel's Getting Married

I saw this movie last night and I was completely blown away by Anne Hathaway's performance in this film. Anne stars as Kym, a young woman in recovery who returns home for her sister's wedding. In doing so she opens a huge can of family disfunction and that's where the drama starts.

After finally seeing this film I now know why Anne Hathaway is nominated. In watching this performance I felt like I was a fly on the wall during a family arguments. Amazing.

Corporate Killed The Radio Star

My favorite radio station, Indie 103.1, went off the air yesterday. Yes, I still listen to radio on occasion as my commute is so short that I don't have time to plug in my iPod so I just usually have the radio on.

When this radio station first surfaced I immediately liked it because the playlist was along what KROQ used to be.

I've had a long standing love affair with radio. I grew up listening to KROQ, KWST, KNAC, KLOS, KMET and 91 X (when I could get it). When I was 9 going on 10 I listened to the radio constantly. Growing up in my house before my mom and dad split we didn't listen to music. After the split and found radio and music it almost became an obsession. Here were these cool sounding DJs bringing me all this stuff I had never heard before! I would look forward to hearing just even the first notes of the next song. These DJ's were my new babysitters and I practically idolized them.

I think part of it is the reason I got so interested in music. All this great stuff I hadn't heard before. Dr. Demento for laughing, Rodney On The Roq for new music, Breakfast With The Beatles on Sunday morning, The Seventh Day listening to albums in their entirety with the sound of the needle touching the vinyl. Ah!!!!! I loved that sound!!!

I also got to dance along and be a Tragedy with the Bee Gees, have some Good Times with Chic and Boogie Oogie Oogie till I just can't boogie no more!

I made endless tapes of the songs that I heard on the radio and would make recordings of me acting as a DJ. I kept lists of what radio played what song I liked at what time and the name of the song along with artist. Yeah, when your young and it's too dark to ride your bike, you find things to fill the hours.

When I got older I used to take the bus to KROQ (when it was in a little building in Pasadena) and started answering request lines. That was a dream! I met all the DJs back in the day and had an absolute blast in doing so. I loved it so much that I would ditch school and take the bus to go and answer request lines. I also got to meet a bunch of bands from being there which opened a bigger can of cool worms. Richard Blade was the reason why I got to meet my favorite band, INXS!! Thank you, Richard!! It was fun! I got to sit in with DJs endless times while they were on the air. I just thought it was the coolest! It was fun just hanging out in that musical atmosphere. I know I probably shouldn't being so young but I don't regret a thing and would do it again in a heartbeat.

So, hearing Indie, it kind of brought back some of those fun memories and I would get to hear actual new music! I loved Jonesy's Jukebox (with Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols) New Wave Nation (with Nina Blackwood of the old Mtv fame) and Harmony In My Head with Henry Rollins from Black Flag. Ah....swoon....
I will miss having this station easily accessable as it will still be online and I am glad they stuck to their format as best they could rather than head down the road that KROQ sadly took. For that reason I will listen to them online whenever I can. Hats off to you, Indie. Thank you for some great sounds on the airwaves.

Hilton Relocation

I just heard a great story that I'd thought I'd share.

Apparently, Paris Hilton tried to crash an A List Golden Globe party. She most likely just tried to waltz in thinking she is Paris Hilton and she can do what she wants! Well, she Is NOT one of the A-listers and they tried to get her to leave. She wouldn't and went and hid in the ladies room. The cops were called and she was escorted out when she finally emerged, 15 minutes later.

Yes! Justice served!

Food Crimes 2009

What is happening with people and food nowadays?

Back when I was a kid and in grade school I never heard about people having food allergies.

Lactose intollerant? Diverticulitis? Nut allergies? When did all these come about? Now I hear that some schools won't allow a kid to bring in a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to school because some other kids may have a nut allergy! Isn't PB&J a rite of passage for some kids? A sunflower butter and fruit spread sandwich on spelt bread (for the wheat allergy) just doesn't cut it. Wash it down with a nice glass of soy or rice milk? I don't think so!!

Where were all these "different" kids when I went to school? I just think it kind of sucks for the kids that don't have food allergies. Maybe they could set them up at a special school and the kids that have vegetarian parents that are raising them as such (no choice) could attend as well. That sounds fair and just.

Happy New Year!!!

Happy New Year everybody!!! I haven't blogged in awhile but I haven't had too much to say.

2008 was a pretty good year. I saw a lot of movies, got a new boss, went to a few concerts, had a great time at Comic Con, got out of debt and met a really amazing boy who is my wonderful boyfriend. Yeah, love like the movies (like I hoped for) does exist!!

Low points were I had to put my wonderful cat, Juno, down, my mom's health continued to decline and my sister was diagnosed with lung cancer. An update on that is they caught it in the first stages and she had surgery 2 days ago and is recovering well.

I am looking forward to 2009 and all the possible great things it brings. I hope to learn and achieve more and enjoy while doing so.

I wish you the best!!
